HASEL Magazine: Welcome, Lawrence! it's a pleasure to have you here. Lawrence, your journey from a childhood in Prince George's to becoming the Vice President of Construction for Wexford Developments LP is truly remarkable. Can you share some pivotal moments or experiences that shaped your path in the construction industry?
Lawrence Zastre: Each time I moved up in my career I asked for it and I took risks. You need to be bold with your career and take ownership of it. Growing up I learned old-fashioned values like reliability, integrity, honesty, and resourcefulness. These foundational values I learned growing up have helped me climb the corporate ladder.
I recall a time when I was working for a large general contractor and my boss was moving to another city with the same company. He asked me if I wanted to run the job. Even though I felt I was not ready and was scared I seized the opportunity. When I reflect back on that decision it was the catalyst for where I am today.

HASEL Magazine: Your background in architecture and project management seems to have provided a solid foundation for your career. How do you think these disciplines have influenced your approach to overseeing construction projects?
Lawrence Zastre: The architect is like the general contractor of the design world. They need to have a general knowledge of structural, mechanical, electrical, and building envelope design. I learned these foundations during my years at SAIT and further honed them as a project manager. Being a project manager on dozens of projects varying from light civil, retail, industrial, commercial, and multifamily projects has rounded out my skillset.
I have lots of general knowledge of different types of construction which I have brought to real estate development. In my current role, I get to mold and shape projects from the initial conception and massing all the way to shovels in the ground. It is very rewarding to see a project that was an idea on paper come to life with tenants using the building.

HASEL Magazine: It's evident that family plays a significant role in your life, from your upbringing in a large family to your marriage to an Indian family. How have these familial ties influenced your personal and professional growth?
Lawrence Zastre: Growing up with such a large family we all had to pitch in and help. My parents couldn’t take care of it all. Being one of the last siblings born, I was also able to learn from the mistakes and successes of my older siblings. In a sense I got a head start by learning from them at scale.
My wife, Vishu, and son, Everett, keep me humble. The Indian culture is all about family, respect of your elders, and celebration. The music, festivals, food, and clothing are so rich and vibrant. The culture has helped me learn how to stand out with clothing, design, and attention to detail. When I review a set of drawings or construction on site, I always look at the details. You can see if a builder or designer takes pride in their work or not. When they do it is like art.

HASEL Magazine: Your passion for alternative energy, particularly solar and electric, is inspiring. How do you envision the construction industry evolving to embrace more sustainable practices in the future?
Lawrence Zastre: There is a building certification called Passive House that is very hard to achieve. The general premise is you increase the thermal performance of your building envelope and as a result, you can shrink the size of your mechanical systems. As one engineer put it, “You can heat a suite with a match.” In the future, I see buildings becoming more self-sufficient and energy-neutral.
The buildings will produce as much energy as they consume using efficient designs like solar panels, ground source heat pumps, energy recovery ventilation, intelligent lighting design, smart building automation technology, and more efficient building envelopes.
The term floating around is called Net Zero. Electrification of cars, houses, and buildings is becoming more economically feasible each year and the federal, provincial, and municipal governments are now making it not optional.

HASEL Magazine: As a leader in the construction industry, what advice would you give to aspiring professionals looking to make an impact in this field, especially those who may be considering a career change or transition?
Lawrence Zastre: If you are thinking of a career in construction, you should find out and understand the various career paths available. Reach out to someone you know in the industry or attend construction industry events and conferences. Once you see a path that excites you, go for it.
Don’t worry if you felt you got it wrong after the first try. Once you get your foot in the door that experience will help you get the next job. I have heard of carpenters who are now engineers. The construction industry is fast-paced and demanding but can be very fulfilling. If you put in your time, it can be professionally and financially very rewarding.
